Summer Youth Jobs Alert!
Open Enrollment for the summer jobs program will happen THIS WEEK, Monday June 4th - Thursday June 7th between 9am - 4pm, at WCAC Room 203. (Crazy hrs... when some youth don't get out of school until after 2pm and still need to get downtown!) The youth eligibility is below. Generally speaking, if youth are elligible for free/reduced lunch, they are usually eligible for the program. I think the students can get a letter from their guidance office at school to meet the criteria.
I STRONGLY suggest you call the WCAC office on Monday and ask Robert Morrison 508-754-1176 x153 rmorrison@wcac.net the exact paperwork they will want you and your child (grand-child or child you simply care about) because I've heard many people get frustrated because they get down there to fill out the application and are told "you don't have all the info we need...". It says that people must provide a signed copy of their Social Security Card, but if you don't have one some reason... there are other means. If a child is in foster care, they can simply get a letter from their social worker.
People have also been told in the past that they aren't eligable because they live in a certain zip code, even though they meet the criteria. So, they can't do that. If you find that you are having any difficulty getting the youth in your life enrolled, please contact us here at Black Legacy and we will help figure things out. The criteria is not as rigid as it appears.
ALSO, as you know.... Black Legacy is committed to building our youth leadership. To that end, we are creating a summer job opportunity where high school youth can tutor kids in the 3rd and 7th grade in literacy and math so that our younger kids can see that the older youth are strong role models and build our community connections. SO, I think the summer jobs application lets you give a placement preference and if you'd like your youth to work with us, please put down [Black Legacy] as the job placement.
There is not enough money to place all of the youth that apply so get there ASAP with all you need to get your youth on the list. If you can make it all happen on Monday, do that. If not, then Tuesday.
Again, let us know if you need help. You can call me at 508-340-5331. Good luck!
