The Black Girls' Corner (TBGC)

Mission Statement (revised 7/1/11):
To provide a voice, an outlet, and positive youth development/personal leadership skills development,
coupled with group or one-on-one adult mentoring, to young girls in our communities;
so that these girls (“Debutantes”) will be empowered to become their best selves and strong, effective leaders around the world.©

Vision Statement (revised 7/1/11):
Our “Debutantes” in The Black Girls’ Corner will become well-adjusted, confident young ladies
who will be equipped with the skills and the know-how they need
to survive in any community, to overcome any societal ill, and to fulfill their destinies.©

The Black Girls' Corner™ (TBGC™) was founded in June 2010 by Vickie L. Hughes, J.D., M.A., aka "Miss Vickie". This youth empowerment mentoring organization assists minority girls, ages 10-15, and their mothers (or other caregivers).

The uniqueness of our organization is that we get the mothers (or other caregivers) involved and engaged in what our girls/debutantes are doing and/or learning!
The Black Girls' Corner bi-weekly sessions could be held anywhere...  For now, we've chosen a cozy little spot, nestled away in Charlotte, NC. We created and will always own our quite unique and original name! Our organization name is not representative of a specific place, but rather a designated space where minority girls can come and be themselves; discover who they are; grow and learn; uncover and display their talents; and reach their potential individually and together.

Our first session was held on June 12, 2010.
We have a core group of 16 TBGC Debutantes™ (our Founding Members/Debutantes), who attend with their mothers (or other caregivers). As of June 2011, our group of Debutantes has grown to 25. They love being a part of TBGC™ and "they keep coming back!"
Please note: The Founder is very protective of our Debutantes and for that reason, you will only see our Debutantes' first names listed (sometimes with a first initial of one's last name, if another Debutante shares the same first name and spelling of it) (with the exception of our Biography section), and no Debutante appears in any photographs alone on our site (with the exception of our Biography section). Our youth are THAT important to protect!
