MISSION

Girls Rock NC is a nonprofit organization that empowers girls and women, through creative expression, to become confident and engaged members of our communities.

Girls, ages 7-16, form bands, attend workshops in teamwork, body confidence, zine-making, DIY clothing, recording, Tech Talk, songwriting and more, and are supported as they speak up and share their experiences. We’re part of the international Girls Rock Camp Alliance, helping each other stay true to our mission–empowering girls! Close to 1,500 girls around the globe will have the rock camp experience in 2012. We also host Women’s Rock Retreats to offer adults who identify on the female spectrum the chance to rock out as well!

What We Do

Girls Rock NC uses music and performance as the mediums for self expression and esteem building. We accomplish this with programming that focuses on the “three Cs”: creativity, confidence and collaboration. It’s not enough to hand a young girl an I-pod loaded with feminist music. She needs to know what to do with the messages she hears. How does she engage her community with her new ideas and sense of self worth? How does she gain the confidence to make her voice heard? We believe that loud, unapologetic music is a great place to begin.

Who We Are

GIRLS ROCK NC is a nonprofit organization that empowers girls and women, through creative expression, to be confident and engaged members of our communities.

Our flagship program, NC Rock n Roll Camp for Girls, has entered its ninth year! Nearly 180 girls, many of whom have never met, and in most cases, have never stood on a stage, will pick up an instrument, form a band, write a song together and perform it for the community after only a week of camp. In between band practices, the girls have workshops in image and identity, a history of women in music, screen-printing, self defense, and more. A few girls actually leave the camp with a full-fledged band that will continue to rock all year. Every girl leaves with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and empowerment.

As Girls Rock NC begins expanding its reach, we hope to work towards greater diversity in our programs. We want to provide a safe, and socially challenging, space for girls from every socio-economic background to create together. All great movements, social and feminist, require diverse experience, perspective and skills, in order to truly thrive. We cannot encourage a girl’s growth as a woman without addressing her growth as a person. We are striving each year to increase the number of scholarships offered in our summer camps and after school programs. Our community members and local businesses are a huge part of this effort.

Our dream is to have a permanent building which houses our offices, equipment, and programs. In the meantime, you can send correspondence to P.O. Box 3431 Durham, NC 27702.
